C.A.R.E. + Clean Air Project Overview

This project aims to supply air purifiers and scope out air quality monitoring for San Francisco’s Potrero Hill public housing development. For phase one, we successfully delivered 100 air purifiers. Access to air purifiers means access to clean air, something which can be hard to come by in a neighborhood surrounded by multi-lane highways, new construction, and smoke during fire season. Contributions from socially-conscious businesses and individuals are the driving force behind this effort. Households that are home to individuals with higher respiratory risks, such as seniors, newborns, and those with pre-existing conditions will receive equipment first.

The Potrero Hill Terraces are home to ethnically diverse families from all walks of life. Many residents are essential workers, and receive substantial community support from C.A.R.E.. C.A.R.E. is a non-profit based in Potrero Hill that focuses on improving quality of life and access for local residents. This includes feeding those in need, extending educational resources to youth, and mitigating police-community relations. All funds raised here will be funneled through C.A.R.E. and will be applied to the C.A.R.E. + Clean Air Project. By supporting this fundraiser by C.A.R.E., you’re directly impacting the lives of Potrero’s most vulnerable residents.

In addition to installing air purifiers, funds raised will go towards local education efforts on air quality risks and respiratory health awareness. These efforts are made possible by strategic partnerships with companies like GAMS (a provider of indoor air quality monitoring equipment) and BRIDGE (non-profit developer of low and mixed income housing across California). We recently launched Phase Two of this project, which will expand access to 500 additional households of the Potrero Hill and Sunnydale public housing developments.

Technical Analysis

Our analysis examined several key metrics for 13 models of air purifiers. Our primary considerations were Smoke Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) and Dust CADR, initial price, and annual cost for filter replacement and electricity. Assuming an energy cost of $0.15 /kWh, and 24/7 operating time, the Winix 5500, Honeywell HPA 300, Levoit 133, and Blue Air Pure 211 stand out as the top four options. While all models have five year costs under $1000, the Honeywell HPA 300 and Winix 5500 stood out given their low annual filter replacement cost. After factoring efficacy of the different models, the Blue Air Pure 211 also emerged as a relevant consideration given it’s ability to deliver clean air more quickly, even in air with densely concentrated particulates.

Recognizing that residents will be responsible for maintaining the purifiers and updating filters after the initial install, we made our final selection based on the annual cost of filters for the three models. On this criteria, the Honeywell HPA 300 and the Winix 5500 came in with the lowest annual filter replacement cost of $80. The final selection came down to the fact that the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD), which we hope to include as a partner as this project expands, has approved Winix for their own air purifier disbursement initiatives. Additionally, Winix kindly offered to be an official partner of this project and help us reach a broader audience.

As a result, funds from this project will be used to purchase Winix 5500 air purifiers. Our methodology and purifier selection for this project is based on input from Cornell University Sustainable Design, a project team that sits in Cornell University’s Systems Engineering Department.
